Stop Start on short journeys

I will take delivery of a new Golf SE on Thursday..
Since my last purchase of a Polo SEL in mid-2011 technology has advanced so the Golf now has Stop Start and the automatic handbrake ( the latter not to my liking though).
Can anyone comment the suitability of keeping the stop start system engaged at all times for my type of driving.
I live in central Edinburgh and most of my car use is for short journeys…..very short in fact of under a couple of miles.
Typically taking the car to the supermarket only ¾ mile or so away usually involves 2 or 3 stops at busy junctions and a set of traffic lights.
Does the stop start technology wait until the engine has reached normal working temperature?
I know it will not come on if there are certain demands such as aircon.
My concern is that it would not seem good for the engine not to warm up and be stopped and started so frequently??

My Stop Start does not come on very often when you brake gently to a halt, but if you stop then press the brake peddle harder the Start Stop then works. To start the engine either press the throttle or the brake peddle again.

You can also switch off the stop/start system with a button next to the gear level.

Don't quite know how the automatic handbrake is 'not to your liking' without having taken delivery. It's one of the bast features on the car - I'd have difficulty going back to a manual brake, particularly on hills...

Thanks for replying.
I did have a long test drive and did get the feel of the auto handbrake so I think the "issue" was just me being an old fart and not having confidence in new technology.
Edinburgh is a pretty hilly place.
A neighbour had this feature on a Passat a few years ago before they had finessed the techy bits and had problems.
I know that you can switch the stop start off and will probably do so initially.
Any comments on the engine warming bit though??

The system does not function until the engine reaches a certain temperature, so during the winter on your trips, it's not even going to activate, today was 9.5c and on a trip to the supermarket the system was not ready to work.
As for the handbrake, sometimes it's not worth harbouring on the negative comments , the only part you will have to get used to is remembering to have the seat belt on, as the auto brake will not function without it.
Perhaps with a manual the sytem maybe a little more erratic, but with auto it is pretty much seamless.

The “aut Start/Stop surveillance” use many inputs to decide if to stop the engine or not. One is the battery charging level. If you turn of some big energy consumers perhaps the system activates a stop since the energy consumption decreased.

Another is the engine temp. S/S is activated rather quickly after you have started the car, in my opinion long before the engine is warm enough, say when you have driven a couple of hundred meters/yards from your home. Acts different on different models.

All start ups increase the wear of start engine, general wear of bearings since you will have zero in oil pressure before every start up. Also I don’t like to run the engine I half warm status to long.

If you don't want it - Press the deactivation button every time you start the car or deactivate the system via VCDS/VAG com software.

VCDS/VAG com is another story itself. You must have the tool and the knowhow to handle it. Perhaps you know somebody who own one….

I have deactivated via VCDS on both our Golf mk 7 cars since we forget to press the "button" ;).

I assume Bonnyblink has a DSG. With my manual I can just keep the clutch depressed if I know that the stop will be brief or I want to warm the car up more quickly.

Yes.....but I don’t want to press the clutch pedal a number of times every day when not needed. Easier to press the deactivation button once at each start up occasion or as I did, “tweak it” to get rid of it via the “Start_Stop_Voltage_Limit” parameter (the only one so far, what I know, that works on newer mk 7) and VCDS.

FYI - Our TSI 1.4 equipped with DSG and The R is manual. Since different family members use them, I can’t control what they do. My wife uses the R today, for sure she wouldn’t consider to keep the clutch down at every stop light ;).

However an interesting topic :).

re grahamgolf reply..........thanks for commenting.
It is / will be manual and sure I concluded that just keeping clutch depressed is an option.
I will no doubt keep it off for the VERY short journeys and engage when it is meaningful.
I do appreciate everyone getting back to me 'cos emails to senior people fell on deaf ears..........maybe as i was not complaining as I got very quick feedback re my Polo when I moaned about a number of problems.
Thanks again everyone.......

I've not really found start stop to be a problem when testing an R yesterday. I thought it would be but if you just touch the accelerator lightly before u want to go it will start if instant traffic light go is needed. Also tried nearly full throttle start from stop function and it really doesn't make much difference.

How do u disengage ?

I am annoyed by the S/S because the start is not smooth and sends an unpleasant shock in the cabin, I use it rarely.

I was very sceptical about start-stop but from the test drive onwards it's always felt more like pause-continue to me - very smooth.

I cycle a lot through west London (where new 4x4s, Mercs, bigger VWs etc. are rampant) and in the past couple of years I've been very aware that start-stop is becoming more and more common.

Assume you know about the switch...... but to disable permanently needs specialist kit as our friend in Sweden mentioned.
That said i read that it cannot be done "legally" in UK as it is contrary to the lower VED band.
If one could / did do it any warranty would be invalidated though.

I am sure I personally will get used to just pressing the button..
Looking fwd to taking delivery tomorrow morning ...and dumping my Polo SEL which, although is a fun car to drive has exhibited too many issues over its short 2.5 yr stay with me.

Do let us know how you get on. I am sure you will really enjoy the car. It will not take long to get used to all the new fangled shenanigans. I made the mistake of trying to read the handbook thoroughly before just getting in and driving. The handbook makes everything appear far more complicated than it actually is as the car is really quite intuitive to operate.

PS I think the handbrake is fab but the auto-hold sometimes is reluctant to let go in congested city traffic and the clutch is released very slowly.

Enjoy:)
