Sounds like the OP sensor. Or the connector. I had a similar message for a wheel speed sensor. They couldn't be sure it was the sensor or the connector shell so they replaced both.

The 2018's won't really have anything a 2016...

The 2018's won't really have anything a 2016 doesn't. The only thing I can think of is pedestrian monitoring, and I'm not sure it's much of an improvement over the current front radar.
